In Marseille, just before sailing

Departure from the Monastery of Notre Dame de la Plaine, the Mother House, 23rd August 1954.

Embarcation: Marseille, 25th August 1954.

On the 24 September 1954, 3 of our Sisters arrived in Yokohama. It was the first time sisters from our Order had been sent out on a mission like this. After a year spent learning Japanese and making various enquiries as to the place of the future house, the sisters settled in the town of Hamamatsu in Shizuoka Province. A monastery, high school and nursery school were built in 1956.

In 1998, after 42 years, responsibility for the school was transferred to the Spinola sisters and the Bernardine Community moved to Mikkabi, a small town in the country about thirty km away from Hamamatsu. The sisters there are preparing to celebrate, in a spirit of gratitude, the 50th anniversary of the arrival of their predecessors on Japanese soil, on 11th October 2004.
