Members of the novitiate with the superior of Hyning

So what is a vocation?

Literally a calling from the Lord. Could religious life be for you? Maybe you would be interested to hear from some of our sisters, young and old, who have been called to the Bernardine way of life.  In England we have two junior sisters at Brownshill, and at Hyning, a junior and a novice.

In the Bernardine Order we now have 11 juniors, 8 novices and 6 postulants (at the last count but it keeps changing!). There also people interested in joining in England, France, Africa and elsewhere! Annabelle joined the French community in December 2016 and moved to England in August 2018.  Audrey joined us in December 2017 and Sr. Hilda made her Solemn Profession in August 2018. Sr Marie Therese has just joined us as well so we have 4 in formation at Hyning at the moment.

Come and See Weekends are held each year. the next one is February 15-17th 2019. The theme of the weekend is Adoremus:faith and Discernment. Please contact Sr. Mary Bernard at hyningbookings@yahoo.co.uk for more details. if you need more general information on religious life, this might be a good link to look at. Compass is a Vocation discernment programme for young men and women.

When Jesus' first disciples wanted to know how he lived, Jesus invited them to 'come and see'. It is the same today. The first disciples were not perfect, neither are we!

All that is needed is a willingness to grow in faith and respond to the grace God gives you. The best way to understand monastic life is to spend time sharing the life, prayer and work.

If you feel God is calling you to the religious life and need some help discerning God's will, contact Sr. Maria at Hyning or email srmariabernardine@yahoo.co.uk.

Julia joined us in August 2015, watch the video interview with her as she tells us about her Bernardine journey in the first few weeks.  She became a novice in April 2017.  She will become Sr. Mary Gabriel on the 23rd February 2019.

Part of novitiate life is exploring one's gift from God. This involves exploring different aspects of community work.   Irene joined us 3 years ago and is now Sr Reina. She took her vows of religious profession on the 8th October 2016. Her story can be found here.  Please click to follow her story.

The video gives you a brief introduction of our our life and prayer as Bernardines.  It contains clips from our sung Offices and images from our monasteries around the world.

Earlier this year the novitiate in Europe met up at Hyning.  These are the current members with the two Novice Mistresses in the middle!  (Sr. Hilda has just made her Solemn profession.)
