Our monastery is situated on the Lancashire / Cumbria border, in the north west of England. It is an area renowned for its natural beauty. The region, with its crops of limestone, is designated an Area of Outstanding Beauty |
To the north lies the Lake District with its spectacular scenery of glacial mountain peaks and ribbon lakes. To the east lies the more gentle Yorkshire Dales and the north Pennines. To the west is Morecambe Bay, with its infamous sands.
Close proximity to the M6 and A6 ensures easy access to the monastery. Our nearest train station is Carnforth (3 miles) from which the Carnforth Connect Bus Line 1 serves the monastery.
We are a Community of 13 sisters, ranging in age from sisters in their 30s to 80s, comprising 4 nationalities. This broad mix ensures a balance and richness in our community life together. We are all involved in the work of the guesthouse. |

Hyning is the novitiate house for our English communities. Here, we welcome those who wish to commit their lives to the search for God through the monastic vocation. Before Solemn Profession, a sister in temporary vows would experience life in other communities of the Order. For information on vocations and formation please click here
Through our work of hospitality, we welcome those who wish to share the peace and prayerfulness of our monastic guesthouse and garden. The guesthouse is available most of the year to individuals or groups of all denominations wishing to pray, reflect or study in the quiet atmosphere of a monastery. |
The Community is involved in giving talks and in leading Retreats, as well as in all the day to day running of a busy guesthouse.
The Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning is in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lancaster and we welcome many parish groups and diocesan organisations. We particularly value the richness of our ecumenical contacts and welcome people of all Christian denominations. We aim to provide, in the words of the Second Vatican Council, “a seedbed of growth for the Christian people”. |

The Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning was founded in 1974 by four sisters from our communities at Slough and Westcliff-on-Sea, Essex.
Until 1973, the house and garden was the home of the Peel family; a splendid country mansion situated in acres of farmland. This main house now serves as our guesthouse. In 1983, an extension was built to link a large outbuilding to the main house. This is now the Community area. A year later, a large barn was converted into a simple and prayerful Chapel with the cloister corridor built to link it with the main house. |
![]() Our last major building project was in 1999 when one wing of the house was gutted in order to install a lift and provide further accommodation and resources. |
