2010 news Burkina Faso Cycle ride

Greg Ormerod and friends from the parish are to embark on a 100 mile sponsored bike ride round the Fylde on Saturday 10th July. During their centenary year it was decided that, as a Parish, they should begin a project that would both celebrate the many blessings on the Parish over the past 100 years and confirm their commitment to reaching out to those less fortunate each year going forward. Burkina Faso, being the second poorest country in the world, became their focus.
The Bernardine sisters are heavily involved in building up a church community there as well as supporting the local community in de-veloping the skills for them to become self sufficient. This year, the Burkina Faso group is aiming to raise £5,000 to specifically help the Sisters in Burkina Faso to:
a. undertake the construction of the sisters bedrooms
b. improve the vegetable garden and livestock to ensure self sufficiency for the whole of the year.
This year's fundraising effort was launched on the 13th June. Greg Ormerod and friends are to embark on a 100 mile sponsored bike ride round the Fylde on Saturday 10th July. Greg was interviewed briefly by Joe Wilson on Radio Lancs. recently. More news will follow after the weekend... Good luck Greg and friends.

2009 news....

Our foundation in Burkina Faso was a desire by the African sisters to spread the Bernardine charism to another area of Africa. After visiting different countries, the Order decided to respond to the invitation of Mgr Jean Baptiste Somé who wished to have a monastic foundation in his diocese of Diébougou in Burkina Faso. We have been there since 2002 and the foundation continues to grow. Burkina Faso is one of the poorest countries in the world. Approximately 60 percent of the population practice Islam, 24 percent of the population maintains traditional indigenous beliefs, 17 percent practices Roman Catholicism, and 3 percent are members of various Protestant denominations.

Celebration of the centenary Mass

St Joseph's, Ansdell was founded in 1909, when the Catholic population of the Flyde region began to develop. The foundation stone for St Joseph's church was laid on 22nd August 1909 by Dr Whiteside, Bishop of Liverpool, in which diocese the parish was at that time. The church was erected by trustees in memory of Mgr. James Taylor and his brother, Fr Roger Taylor. They had been in charge of the adjacent parish, St Peter's, Lytham, from 1873 until1908 and saw the need for a new parish in the neighbourhood. They generously paid for the new church, which cost £12,000 including furnishings.

Sisters in Burkina

As part of their centenary celebration, the parish decided to help 'build' another community, church, and wondered how they could achieve this. Fr. Harry, the parish priest, suggested contacting the Bernardines as his previous parish had supported the Bernardines in Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Sr Josephine Mary up a tree in Burkina!

A group was set up to raise awareness and funds for this new church in Burkina. Sr. Josephine Mary, who is the present superior of the Bernardines at Hyning, went to speak to the parish during Lent 2009 and spoke of her experiences there.

People building church together Over £13,000 was raised in the short space of a month through a variety of activities. This was sent directly to our sisters there to help them build a new momastery and eventually hopefully, a church as well. This has gone towards the new building, the guest areas and the new monastery. Images of the foundation
