The orginal Bon Secours monastery was founded in 1904, following the enforced closure of the original monastery at Esquermes (near to Lille) and the other convents in France. It is the only house of the Bernardines of Esquermes in Belgium, but because of our history we have a long connection with this region. In 1904, the monastery was built at Bon Secours to accommodate about 50 nuns and 200 boarding pupils, the majority of whom were French. It was closed in the 1980 as the community moved into 2 houses at Peronnes and Peruwelz. Peruwelz was chosen to continue and it developed a range of educational and hospitality works. One special feature of the house is its Icon studio which opened in 1985. In 2007 the decision was made to close Peruwelz. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated at the Basilica of Our Lady of Bon Secours on the 14th March 2010 to celebrate the Order's presence in Belgium over a long period of our history.
