Welcome to our website
The Bernardines of Esquermes are an order of Cistercian nuns, part of the larger Cistercian family. We live according to the Rule of St. Benedict, seeking God as a community in a spirit of prayer, simplicity and silence. We take the traditional monastic vows of stability, obedience and conversion of life. Work in education and hospitality has always been an integral part of our life.
At the moment the General Chapter of the Order is taking place at our Mother House in Lille, France. On the 27th July 2014, Sr. Mary Helen Jackson was re-elected for 6 years as Prioress General.
During this week the General Council of the order was also elected. Here are our new councillors.
"If we do not venture to approach people who are in power, except with humility and reverence, when we wish to ask a favour, how much must we beseech the Lord God of all things with all humility and purity of devotion?
And let us be assured that it is not in many words, but in the purity of heart and tears of compunction that we are heard."
Rule of St. Benedict, Chapter 22
The first degree of humility is obedience without delay. This becomes those who, on account of the holy subjection which they have promised, or of the fear of hell, or the glory of life everlasting, hold nothing dearer than Christ. For He Himself has said: "He that hears you hears Me" (Lk 10:16). And it must be rendered by the disciples with a good will, "for the Lord loves a cheerful giver" (2 Cor 9:7).
Rule of St. Benedict, chapter 7
"I said, I will take heed of my ways, that I sin not with my tongue: I have set a guard to my mouth, I was dumb, and was humbled, and kept silence even from good things" (Ps 38:2-3).
"If at times we ought to refrain from useful speech for the sake of silence, how much more ought we to abstain from evil words on account of the punishment due to sin."
