World Day of Prayer for Creation

Pope Francis has established September 1 as an annual World Day of Prayer for the Care of Creation, inspired by the example of the Orthodox Churches who have observed this day for a number of years. Pope Francis wishes to remind us that: “Christians are called to “an ecological conversion whereby the effects of their encounter with Jesus Christ become evident in their relationship with the world around them.” Thus, “living our vocation to be protectors of God’s handiwork is essential to a life of virtue; it is not an optional or a secondary aspect of our Christian experience.”(Laudato Si’, 217).

Please take some time today to pray this prayer

All-powerful God, you are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. O God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of this earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may protect the world and not prey on it, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contemplation, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace. Amen.

News from the Junior course

At the end of June, Hyning hosted the Region of the Isles' junior course. The course explored the history of Medieval nuns and monks in the UK. The history began with the foundation of the Cistercian monastery at Waverley in Surrey in 1128 to the Dissolution of the Monasteries under Henry VIII. The course consisted of lectures, seminars, presentation and a trip to a Cistercian ruins at Furness. The course was given by Br.Colman, a Benedictine monk from Glenstal Abbey in Eire.

One of the highlights was the trip to Furness Abbey where the juniors visited the ruins while Br.Colman explained the details and the architecture.  Most of the juniors were amazed by the alignment of the monastery to the movement of the sun. The group ended their visit by reciting Midday Office in the small chapel ruin and with the group singing the Cistercian Salve.

The Crossing

Last year, Pope Francis encouraged all religious to "wake up the world" and to engage in different ways with people today. One of our responses to this call was to take part in the Morecambe Bay - Cross Bay walk. With the Augustinian Sisters at Boarbank, Grange at the other end of the bay, we organized a weekend for young people to share our understanding of the Consecrated Life. On the Friday night we had a talk from Dr.Warren of the AONB on the geology and nature of Morecambe Bay. On Saturday, we had the presentation of the two orders and time for prayer and reflection. The big event of the weekend was "The Crossing". We have uploaded some pictures of the walk for you to enjoy.

As we approached the middle of the Bay, it was amazing to see people in front of us, and as we looked back, people behind us. It really brings into life how the Israelites might have felt crossing the Red Sea! The ending was very hard going but the feeling of achievement was very satisfying at the end.

May Days

At the moment, we are preparing to welcome St.Peter's Primary School from Lancaster for a few  days retreat. Last weekend we had St.Anne's from Royton for a retreat led by Sr.Michaela on the incarnation.

Irene was pleased to receive 3 Indonesian visitors over the past few weeks. Julia was also here with her family; so we have had some international visitors which always helps us to broaden our perspective on what's happening in the world.

We have praying particularly for the people in Nepal and of course for the new Royal Baby: Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana.

New Bernardine!

After the good news of a national surge in vocations across the country last week, the good news continues for us.  Many of you will know Julia from Germany, who was with us as a volunteer for 2 years. This last year she has been working in Glasgow as a Vincentian volunteer.  Julia will start her postulancy as a Bernardine on the 19th August. We will have 1 junior, 1 novice and 1 postulant! Please pray for all three of them on their formation journey and for more to join them...

Retreat time

It is a quiet time here at the moment as most of the sisters are in retreat.  5 of the Brownshill sisters are here and several of the oblates are sharing in some of the days. The retreat is being led by Fr. Terence O.S.B of Ampleforth Abbey.
